I hear 우 instead of 으 and am told I pronounce them the same (I'm a French native) This is a question from the definition stage How are 으 and 우 pronounced?

Why is the "w" at the beginning being used, instead of just "oo"? I would expect "Oori" to come closest in terms of pronunciation when transliterating 우리 to English Is the correct pronunciation of 우 actually closer to "woo"?

Maybe 우 sounds a bit more emphatic, but it doesn't sound very different In contrast, 소, 요³, and 포, and the text-to-speech 오 definitely sound like [o] 코 and Wikipedia's [o] also sounds like [u], although if I listen to it while thinking [o] in my head, it starts to sound more like [o]
