- What is ≡ operator used for in math? [duplicate]
Possible Duplicate: When should I use = = and ≡ ≡? I heard about this in our calculus class years ago I was actually not in that class when the professor explained this 95% of engineering student do not know about this operator I'm trying to recall what it meant Is it used standard in math classes? I think it means approximately equal to

In mathematical notation, what are the usage differences between the various approximately-equal signs "≈", "≃", and "≅"? The Unicode standard lists all of them inside the Mathematical Operators B

How do you know when to use ≡ or =? I've seen the the formula for density written with that = and ≡ Also, whilst we're on the topic of symbols, what does an inequality sign with two lines beneath it mean? Is it the same as with one line (greater less than or equal to) Thanks

However, the symbol ≡ ≡ also denotes congruence, e g p2 ≡ 1 (mod 6) p 2 ≡ 1 (mod 6), so using the symbol for two different circumstances can cause some confusion
- Whats the difference among the logical relations :=, =, and ≡?
Rather confusingly, some texts use ≡ for logical equivalence but many, particularly older ones, use it for material equivalence That is a usage that goes all the way back to Principia Mathematica Best just not to use it I would suggest using ⊨⫤ or ⫤ ⊨for logical equivalence and ↔ or ⊂⊃ for material equivalence

With respect to the " ≡ ≡ " symbol (my comment was getting long!): This is more in the way of speculation, but it seems that " a ≡ b a ≡ b " is used in some (not all) contexts to denote " a a is identically b b ", or in other contexts to convey that a a and b b are essentially equivalent (with respect to some equivalence-relation, e g congruence modulo n n, or geometric congruence, or

As far as my understanding can be trusted, ≡ ≡ is often used to draw the reader's attention on the nature of the objects being considered There is always a notion of equality somewhere behind it, but that is more subtle than a simple equality and highly dependent on the context
