In the Greco-Roman world, it was common for meat sold in markets to have been previously offered in sacrifice to idols This practice posed a dilemma for early Christians, particularly in Corinth, a city known for its many temples and diverse religious practices

But idolatry, apparently, is nothing: for the Apostle says (1 Corinthians 8:4): "We know that an idol is nothing in the world," and further on (1 Corinthians 10:19): "What then?
