Over time, smut has come specifically mean to pornography It's been used in this context since at least the 18th century based just on my own reading It probably caught on in the fanfiction world because it's a short word and has connotations beyond sex because it implies something vulgar or a little dirty and therefore more intriguing

And that is- what exactly is smut? I know people use the word smut to mean sex sexual encounters, but if I request a book with sex in it vs requesting smut is there a difference? Not sure when “smut” became so widespread Perceived statistics, but the term commonly used in the spaces I hung out in was “porn” (possibly died out because of the rise of pornhub etc?) or—a little tongue-in-cheek—pwp (plot, what plot?)

Too many smut tags stretches the page and distracts from your actual story People think its literally just porn when they see every sexual position tagged and i personally skip fics that are exclusively porn, even though i love smut when its included in the story

I'm not even a stranger to writing smut, but it was the immense pressure that got to me I had have hundreds of subscribers anxiously waiting for the next chapter which was supposed to have the smut, and because I couldn't get over the hurdle of the smut chapter, I ended up losing interest in the story entirely 😬 Good luck with your writing!
