- Anyone, please tell me about the S W Model 639.
The SCSW says 1984-1988 I have never owned a 639 however I do own a 439 (nickel) and have previously owned a 39-2 and a 3953 I too principally identify with revolvers and typically lean toward DAO or safe-action pistols rather than the DA SA type Having said that the 39 style wears well with me
- 639 - Smith And Wesson Forums
The 639 (Stainless) ran from 1984-88 From my catalog it looks like the serial number you listed is in the 1982-83 range which doesn't match the production dates of the 639 pistol Oftentimes serial number don't match the published year data There are numerous instances where ther numbers don't match

I know that 39 and 639 mags will fit a 639 but they are pretty hard to find and if you do they are pretty expensive Will any of the mags from some of the modern single stack guns fit a 639 ? Thanks in advance, Jim

Bought a 639 back in 1986 while stationed in Germany Took it to the range recently but noticed that the RH safety lever was missing Went back to the range but couldn't even find the screw My efforts to find replacement parts has gone negative as S W and two other vendors have been out of stock
- What is the difference between the model 39 and 639. . .
The S W Model 639 design incorporated an additional firing pin safety mechanism It was also available with ambidextrous safeties, which was never an option with the S W Model 39-2 The S W Model 639 had the flat sear spring, a much more solid, durable set up than the really tiny coil sear spring and plunger of the S W Model 39-2 pistols
