They have a different tip material and were redesigned when changing to the ELD-M line so you get a higher BC from that The 168 ELD-M is a much better long range bullet The limited AMAX bullets of any caliber are around mostly for contracts to be filled If given the choice go ELD-M

Re: Hornady AMAX VS Sierra Matchking 168GR The AMAX line of bullets are very accurate In the 168s the AMAX gives you a little better BC too Buy a box and give them a try You should be able to use the same load as the 168 SMK My 178 AMAX load is the same as the load I used to use with the 175 SMK

At the lower velocity of longer ranges, target bullets behave very nicely with very good terminal ballistics Amax is a good bullet but for intended long range hunting I use the brand ( any brand ) that the rifle likes the best and for some reason the Bullets are almost always Sierra or Berger!

I see this issue on Amax and ELD match bullets was talked about in January but thought I would add my two cents, Rt2506 is right on when he says Amax bullets was listed as hunting bullets

Re: 308 Win, 208 AMax, RL17 Surprising to see that the velocity is a bit low for the amount of powder Just wondering if the bullet grains is too heavy for it For my 208 AMAX in 308 stick with 44 grains of RL15, I got about 2650 fps For my 243 stick using the 105 grains bullets (amax) at 40 4 grains of RL17, I get about the same velocity as 40 6 grains of N550, which is 3000 fps

The ELDM and AMAX perform the same terminally, the ELDM just boosts max range capability and there are now many more options in each caliber than there were with the AMAX, even before they were discontinued The ELDX, like I said, is essentially just an improved SST

Re: Hornady AMAX Match vs Federal Gold Medal Match Federal Gold Medal Match (FGMM) is the standard generally by which all other match ammo is judged It is pretty uniformally consistent and capable of producing extremely good accuracy if the rifle and the shooter are also capable $17 box of 20 is as cheap as you'll find it anywhere Actually $18 box + S H is the cheapest I have heard of
