CPMC is the other SF program and is much smaller (4 residents per year) and as a non-academic program is less competitive Historically it has been very psychodynamically oriented but is moving away from that (similarly, UCSF has also moved away from being as psychotherapy heavy)

I think CPMC is stronger than a low-tier university IM program on the east coast - I still wouldn't call it mid-tier though because the program is small and fellowship matches are still limited (mostly regional matches, small sample size but still)

Also, cedars doesn't have it's own med school, but is one of the main hospitals UCLA students rotate at I think Cedars, like CPMC, falls into a 'community program-plus' category: yeah, they're both community programs, but both hospitals have research, attract decent residents fellows, and both are rotating hospitals for some excellent med schools
