I build the map I want on caltopo (pick a base layer, trace my intended trail, mark potential campsites, water, etc) and then export as a geospatial PDF (or multiple PDFs if the route is long) I email the PDF to myself While hiking I use the Avenza app to view the PDF and my little blue dot moving along the trail I use a free version of
