I have a failed DME on my 2012 X5 35i My local BMW shop told me DME failures are not common for most BMW engines, but they have seen a lot of failures on any model with the N55 engine due to valvetronic solenoid failures shorting the DME Mine didn't fail due to a shorted solenoid Mine

- EWS Delete Bypass and no-start problem finally solved. . .
The DME is paired with the key and the EWS module When the proper key is inserted, the antenna receives the signal from the key chip, it is sent to a unit that amplifies the signal That signal is read by the EWS module which communicates with the DME and gives the go ahead to allow the car to crank
- Bad DME? - BimmerFest BMW Forum
Could be a bad DME, bad wiring, missing supply or ground The answer below the codes states that the valvetronic motor killed the DME output but I don't think that's the case since there is another message stating that the position sensor isn't readable, which is not related to the motor issue Plus the DME outputs are well protected Also no message from instrument cluster is interesting
