Of woods, a grip could be made from any wood: mahogany, beech, driftwood picked up off the beach (!), kauri (a beautiful wood from Western Australia, very likely out of your reach, as is jarrah and Huon!!) and jarrah (an delightfully eye-catching reddish colour) anybody with access to exotic woods and the skills to turn the wood into a grip

Checked out the photo of the birds on the driftwood that you took with that lens I think it's a great pleasure to get such results without spending crazy amounts of money (That said, I do also have the DFA 100 Macro -- which is fairly close in range -- but not a pleasure to focus manually )
