Hello Im new here I have three wonderful chinese elms i bought this year Although they are relatively pretty i thought about cutting off most of the tertiary and secodary branches and start the ramifiction all over (im all about winter silhouette), as most of it is just a thick main branch

Chinese elms are pretty resilient so you should be able to trim the tops or even do a hard trunk chop in a few months I frequently do a very hard root chop and chop the trunks at the same time when transplanting Chinese elms from the grow beds to pots and they still grow well

Here in NC, they drop, but later than just about all my other deciduous Even today (Dec 5) I'd say only about half of my Chinese elm leaves have fallen off the trees Compare that to my American elms, winged elms, cedar elms, silver elms, English elms - all of which dropped a month or more ago

Elms of all sorts are notorious for roots sprouting Elms, crab apples and prunus come up all over the grow beds in the year following digging those species You can definitely use root cuttings to develop bonsai but be warned, not all are great material to work with
