After seeing spines used in the "Flint And Steel Friday" thread, I gave this a whirl with one of the carbon steel knives I have I got sparks, but wasn't able to light up charred punkwood I did however chew up the spine of the knife pretty bad, and had to file it back to a 90* sharp edge for using with a ferro rod

The spare flints in the bottom I took out of a Big that was out of fliud Bic flints fit but they are to long so I had to cut them in half This was easily done with the wire cuter section of a leathrman I then had to spin the wheel with a little pressure against flint to mate it to the wheel before I reinstalled the flint assembly

the confusion comes when you talk about using your 5160 to strike a flint this is commonly called a striker in this case the sparks are made by pieces of the steel chipping off and sparking after being struck with a flint or chert in your case, the 5160 needs to be struck on a hard and sharp enough surface to shave off sparks
