Fern did not recognise the attack as a spell and she could not perceive any mana In the same episode, the story also focused on Übel's ability to visualise the result of her spell So in my opinion what Frieren clone did was basically visualising Fern being pushed away

Nah i think that Fern and Stark are her chance at redemption and where she realizes how to value people around her because they arent there forever It hasnt happened in the manga yet but there will for sure be a very important moment where Frieren becomes sentimental for the two and does something the old frieren would consider "irrational"
