In my opinion, the greatest advantage to regular use of a flint and steel in fire making is the preparation work practice If you mimic that same good tinder preparation for other ignition sources, when the chips are down you'll be very successful Edit to add: Flint and steel is my favorite way to make fires when playing in woods

Is there any quartz flint chert equivalent anybody knows of that is readily available in the north Texas area (Dallas Fort worth)? I'm interested in learning to knapp and, having already gained proficiency making char cloth, use a flint and steel Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

The flint will loose its edge quickly and you'll have to re-knap a new sharp edge Here are some pictures of a dull edge and the spark shower Here are some pictures of a sharp edge on the same flint and the spark shower it throws You can see there is a BIG difference There are some very hot sparks here
