"I forget" is for if you don't know that information right now "I forgot" means that the forgetting happened in the past, leaving open the possibility that you might have remembered in the meantime You could also use the present perfect, "I've forgotten", which means that a past event (forgetting) is continuing to affect the present (you haven't yet remembered)
