All of the marples forstner bits I have purchased have been dull as well, with obviously rounded over cutters I recently picked up a Diablo 1 1 4" at it was a different design and very sharp

You can buy excellent individual Forstner bits in High Speed Steel from places like Lee Valley High Speed Steel is pretty much compulsory for Forstner bits as it doesn't loose its hardness when heated past smoking hot, unlike High Carbon Steel which is junk once its gone blue Since you are on a budget and have a set of bits now, just replace the ones you use For smaller holes get HSS Brad

These are different tools with different use cases Forstner bits are used for smallish holes that require a clean entry and a flat bottom, like a counter bore to recess a bolt head

For Forstner bits I buy Freud Precision Shear bits, they use the same cutting edge design as the Fisch, I haven't used the Fisch forstner bits since I haven't felt a need to not use the Freud I use these for twist bits when I need them which isn't very often in wood working
