Normally the default gateway of LAN devices is a private IP address since the default gateway has to be reachable on the LAN without going through another router gateway But there may be exceptions I guess, for example some cable routers seems to have a mode which allows assigning the public IP address to another device

So yeah, leave the DNS address in your DHCP server the same as your gateway address This will cause all DNS requests to go to the DNS forwarder in your router and then the router will forward that request to a resolver Have a look at some of the following vids and I think some of this basic networking stuff will make more sense to you
