The German Shepherd is my favorite breed, one day I'll have one but there's one problem Why is their lifespan so short? I know they often have health problems but I was searching on Google other shepherd dogs lifespan, there was one that was bigger but lived longer (Carpathian Shepherd) I didn't do further research so maybe there's reasons

The average life span of a german shepherd is 10-13 years (on average, according to several GSD websites) Then how come MY dogs are averaging less than 5??? My first GSD was a shelter rescue, given up at 7 weeks (yes, really) because she had chewed on an electrical cord and burned up the inside of her mouth

I was curious how the life expectancy of dogs has changed over the past 100 or so years Humans in the US have gone from about 47 year in 1900 to 77 or so now I can't find anything on any animals Has anyone ever seen this type of stat on dogs? In nearly 50 years of owning GSDs and wolf shepherds, the oldest was a female wolf shepherd who died in her sleep at 14 5 yrs The youngest was a high-drive DDR GSD who died of bloat and complications at 5 years I have had dogs pass away at all ages in between, a few in their sleep, many euthanized for various fatal health issues Susan Reply Like

According to wikipedia, "The average lifespan of a German Shepherd is 9 7 years" Obviously some go longer and some not as long Whatever the average is, it's not long enough Dogs do not live nearly long enough, so enjoy every day and don't ever take for granted the time you spend together Time goes by way too fast

Many Shiloh Shepherds who range between 90-125 pounds on average, live long lives Their average life expectancy is 12 yrs so I don't think it has to be one or the other
