G-Forces damage hard drives, vibrations are sudden changes in motion (and acceleration) THAT is what damages drives as it causes the heads to hit the platter Flipping a laptop over isn't going to cause high g-forces (unless you proceed to drop it on a hard surface) I used to flip my laptop over all the time

When a mechanical hard drive is powered down the heads reading data from the platters return to a "home" position Unless you smash the drive or console, you won't really damage the hard drive
