I ended up purchasing the kit from Doc I'll most likely start a new thread at some point documenting my experience with the kickstarter installation
- Running the bike with no battery with a kickstarter
Then the kickstarter from a KZ1000, brand new from UK, not original (around 50-60€, but came to 96€ with shipping and customs) And lastly primary gear (34€), but it included a lot of nice bits and pieces: water pump gear, idler gear, clutch basket nut and washer, some sort of metal bushings that I’m not familiar with

- Did Klr ever come with kick start? - Kawasaki KLR Forum
I put a kickstarter on my 89 650 for under $200 using KLR 600 parts found on Ebay Later model KLR's need more parts to get the job done, possibly including the old style clutch basket If the case on your KLR is a solid casting where the kick lever shaft would stick out, you would need an older style side cover
