I do not know Masseys that well but the diagrams Jim posted show alternators for both gas and diesel It may be that the earlier models of those tractors had a generator In either case it looks like you disconnected the 10 ga wire shown connecting to the upper terminal of the ammeter and over to the live battery post on the starter solenoid
