I actually got stronger signal with 14 than 12? Your mileage may vary! The signal can be strong with a single engine test and then fail with a consist (lash-up) I think that also could show up with a poor connection failing under heavier load? ie turning the smoke on

The Nickle-plated MTH track is easier to keep clean, doesn't rust when not in use, and pretty much (now) just works when I lay it down Sadly, that's no longer the case with my Lionel track Your mileage may vary Good luck and keep us posted
