I think that for drum OVERHEAD pickup one should use condenser STEREO mic or two very closely placed condenser mics (preferrably with small capsule, and more preferrably TRUE condenser transformerless) in order to avoid phasing and mono compatibility problems (i e live concert recorded or broadcasted, or standard situation anyway)

Just chuck the mic up and angle it so you're getting the balance you need I have used stereo pairs before to great effect, but only on pretty large stages Cheers!

Use the Rode as a mono overhead I wouldn't go directly over the top but I would shoot for putting it about 6-7 feet off of the ground and a foot or two in front of the kit, basically as more of an area mic

I have a Rode NTK and a Shure SM58 I want to buy another microphone to help me record drums I was thinking of the Rode NT4, using it as an overhead, with the NTK about 18 inches in front of the bass drum and the SM58 picking up the snare
