Todd Todd, since you need a new coil, I would suggest you buy the PerTronix 1 5ohm coil part #40001 for chrome or #40011 for black and run without a ballast resistor This is providing you have the original Ignitor If you have the Ignitor II (better unit), then use part #45001 for chrome or #45011 for Black which is a 6 ohm coil

The only issue I have with pertronix is the general motors design for points distributors wish there was a way they could make a ford "style" unit that didnt depend on vertical air gap, as the ford only worries about horizontal tolerances maybe a magnetic ring that is 2 piece and clamps together at the base of the dizzy

Pertronix gives instructions on how to wire everything up with using the ballast resistor Red wire goes to the pre-ballast resistor ignition wire, and the black wire goes to the neg post on the coil
