- Bass trombone Vs. Tuba - TubeNet - Chisham
What is the difference between bass trombone and tuba? Should I use a small tuba mouthpiece or a large trombone mouthpiece? I currently have Giddings and Webster Bayomo and love it! Would it be beneficial to practice buzzing on a trombone mouthpiece? Happy New Year! Nick

Basically, the 5th valve allows your tuba to go completely down to the fundamental (open pedal "C" on a CC tuba) using "real" notes and no "ghost false tone" notes

MY opinion? C tuba advantages- better D and D# below the staff than, unfortunately, most Bb tubas' C and B, slightly higher probability (when comparing ALL C tubas to ALL Bb tubas) of better build quality, slightly better response (in my opinion negligible when compared to below*)

- Compensating or Non-Compensating - TubeNet - Chisham
The 4 valve system has an extended low range, but at the expense of intonation accuracy involving valve 3 combinations wtih valves 1 and 2 So, for instance, a low F played on a compensating Eb tuba (134 depressed) is no more accurate than the same note played on a non-compensating 3 valve BBb instrument

Thanks for the information!
