I put together my setups before most of these ice fishing fly reel came out I palm my reel and use a pencil grip on the rod, so I can't use many of those special design reels like the 621, black betty, etc I use only mono, fluorocarbon is a bit too stiff and unmanageable in the cold for my liking

Most of the ice fishing reels are really low quality but there are some good ones Go to the regular fishing section and check out their ultra light options I picked up an Abu Garcia Cardinal for $30 and it's very smooth A little low temp lube and you're good to go

The definition of dead sticking that i know of is using an ice fishing spinning rod and reel in a rod holder with a minnow or other bait underneath it You watch the tip for any strikes

The reel spool lip was shaved off just a little, a 36 mm diameter vs the 1000 spool at 38 mm diameter Just this small difference was enough to see the line performance difference at times with small diameter lines and light lures I had used Yo-Zuri Hybrid 4# on one of my 750 sized reels and while it worked wonderful
