Roots love water so they will follow the pipe, go through the wax ring and go down the drain searching for it I agree with you, after you cleared the roots some copper sulfate or root destroyer available at any big box store will do it I like your idea of packing with root destroyer granules or rock salt sounds like a good idea Roots don't like that Just my thoughts Be interesting to read
