SMG has been available also on the 650i until model year 2007 and was replaced with the 6sp Sport Auto with the Facelift MY 2008 Yes, the SMG models are the only ones with paddle shifters in the early model years, and the console shifter (looking like a conventional manual shifter) says "SMG" on top I have ot on my 650i and am very happy with it

SMG will automatically take the car out of gear and release the clutch if the car doesn't move for a period of time It then quickly puts the car back in gear and opens the clutch when your foot touches the throttle

And don't call it SMG-I, there is an actual SMG-I offered in Europe for E36 M3s Launch control in the SSG basically just upshift for you between 1st and 2nd at ~6,400 RPM to avoid fuel cutoff, nothing more

The shifting is unbelievably smooth If you didn't see the tach drop in revs or the gear number change on the dash, you'd never know that it shifted I went from 3 E46 M3's, all with SMG to the '09 E92 M3 with M DCT and the difference is amazing I love the smooth shifts but I also love the way SMG shifted since it was more involving

The SMG (as it's called in my '04) is a six speed It has three modes - normal, sport, and drive (quasi-auto) I believe the SMG was only available in non-M E46 cars in 2004, and it's not the same SMG as in the M cars - those are SMGII and up for those years
