Searching here did not really come up with a solid answer, as it was suggested I change the file name, but just changing the file extension from sav to srm did not work (the file is not recognized by the game)

Run the conversion tool from requirement 4 to convert the sav files to json Open the OldLevel sav json file created (it will probably be very large, but Notepad++ worked for me) and search for the first 8 chars from step 5 If it doesn't find those characters, try again with an even older backup (if you don't have one, you're probably SOL)
