In TFS, it seems, when I merge changesets 1, 2, and 3 from my source branch to a target branch, those three changesets are merged into a new, single changeset 4 in the target branch

As far as I know the TFS_Analysis database is not one of the databases you must back up, it is an option one The data in the TFS_Analysis comes from TFS_Warehouse The TFS job agent extracts data from TFS_Warehouse and put it into TFS_Analysis regularly Please also take a look at this article, understanding backing up team foundation server

I tried as you suggested , Installed TFS 2010 SP1 and also cleaned the cache and created a new workspace Having the latest again come with the same error "The server committed a protocol violation

1 Is it practical to achieve what we want using TFS ? eg would we be able to set up development environment for the application in Classic ASP and microsoft Java ? For Java, there's a TFS client from TeamPrise I am not sure what are the specifics of working with MS Java, though, hopefully Mr Martin Woodward will join the thread and elaborate
