  • 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition Commemorative Coin
You have a commemorative medal (not a coin) issued at the Columbian Exposition in 1893 It is listed as Eglit-242 in the standard catalog "Columbiana" by Nathan Eglit and was struck in brass which was then gilded before issue The piece was issued with an integral loop struck with the medal but your example has the loop missing (as many do) You can see the remnants at 12 o'clock on both sides
  • Detecting and dealing with PVC - An example - Page 2
Thanks for the info Eric Whenever I crackout an old Green PCI slab, I use a small Pyrex bowl and give the coin an acetone bath I have the urge to buy a PVC coin (cheap of course) and practice the removal process I've heard that the old Green PCI Hallmark slabs have PVC (that shower curtain smell) Is rinsing with distilled water a necessity eventhough acetone evaporates quickly? -mark
  • Fairmont Collection of Liberty Double Eagles - Page 3
This type of information was provided in great detail for the Gilded Age collection of mint state double eagles sold by Stack’s-Bowers several years ago Does anyone have any information on the Fairmont Collection that can be shared?
  • Michigan show theft — Collectors Universe
I got this from Doug Davis of NCIC today I'm not sure what methodology the thieves will be using to sell, hopefully shops will be on the lookout
  • Does anyone know a simple way to remove gilt from a silver coin?
"The surfaces", in terms of the original surface which the silver coin used to have prior to being gilded, are already destroyed The coin would most likely have been chemically cleaned prior to the electroplating or whatever technique was used to apply the gilding
  • Help with German grading standards — Collectors Universe
I recently bought the standard reference work 'Die Deutschen Munzen seit 1871' by Jaeger My reading comprehension with respect to colloquial and business German is pretty good But, wow, I really needed my dictionary's help for a technical field such as numismatic grading In carefully re-reading the grading standards in the book, am I correct in concluding that Stufe 1 (polierte Platte) means
  • 1883 LIberty nickel Cents vs. No Cents Values and why
Coin collecting (or hoarding) was more common at the time than most collectors would suspect since all we really hear about these days are the well known and wealthy collectors of the gilded age
  • Morgans vs. Seated Dollars Availability — Collectors Universe
Seated designs are more aesthetic in a lot of ways, more graceful according to classical standards Morgans have their own charm and seem to me a more serious workhorse of commerce during the gilded age
