Renaissance wax also has a pronounced smell to it, so I would not use it much where others may get a whiff I found I needed to reapply about every 4-6 months or so depending on use of the gun It is easy to apply and it does not take much, which is a good thing as it is not cheap You let dry to a haze and then wipe off
