"In the ten millennia since the Battle of Calth, the Sergeants of the Ultramarines and several other Codex-compliant Chapters continue to paint their helmets red to signify the honour accorded to the Astartes who achieve this rank" - however this SM doesn't have a helmet, so maybe the rest of the armour was painted red to represent this? This is just a guess however
- What nationality are each of the legions meant to resemble?
There may be something, but I can only think of the warrior culture associated with each of them Dark Angels are the secretive robed type, Space Wolves are the barbaric rule breakers, Ultramarines are the dogmatic rule followers, blood angels are the vampiric bunch, Imperial Fists are the siege masters, Iron hands = cyborgs, etc

I recommend starting with the Ultramarines omnibus by Graham McNeil It's a good read and the Ultramarines are a good chapter to start out with because they are sort the poster children for what the Space Marines represent
