Recently we upgraded to Symantec's BackupExec 2010, and since then we have been getting a VSS writer failure when running our backup jobs I am trying to do a simple backup of my Exchange server information stores and it will fails everytime

Before the backup, the VSS application needs to be registered with Windows Server Backup, to be avaliable for recovery Only those VSS writers which donot require reboot during restore, and are not system writers (writers protecting windows system files) are supported for application recovery

That should fix the VSS Writer problem Also, as a side note, when your SqlServerWriter dies, you can re-set it by going into services and restarting the Sql Server Vss Writer service This avoids having to re-boot every time you want to reset the VSS SqlServerWriter Many thanks to Microsoft support for helping with this issue

Now though, when I attempt a VSS snapshot and that VM happens to be running, I get the VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE error If that VM is not running, the VSS snapshot works fine

The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout I checked the VVS service and this was set to Manual (which is correct) however this was not started Do you have any more ideas on this problem, help would be appriciated ?
