is it necesary to sanitize corks prior to bottling? if so, how do you go about doing that?

It takes less than about 10 minutes to cork 6 gallons of wine with it, and for the 375ml bottles, I just put a hockey puck under the bottle to cork those as well Of course, we have hundreds of hockey pucks laying around, so someone who lives in Florida may have difficulty there Once I bought it, I couldn't believe I ever used anything else

And would said wine soaked cork turn into a vinegar soaked cork and act as a starter on the new bottle the second time around? It's not so much the old wine in it, but using a cork screw puts a big hole in the cork Also, corks are compressed to put them in the bottle, then they expand to seal the bottle tightly Corks are not reusable

The k-meta steam is fine, but if the corks are coming from a sealed package no need to do a thing to the cork other than minimal handling, preferably only the end of cork that is facing up out of bottle Clean and sanitize hands, clean and sanitize corker, then hands again before bottling

For early drinking wines, a beer bottle and cap or flip top is probably perfect If your wine is carbonated at all, a cork should NOT be used- it'll blow for sure For carbonated wines, a flip top or cap is mandatory (unless you're using champagne corks and cages) I think screw tops are iffy- they may work ok, but you're taking a chance

You can reuse wine bottles without any problem but bottles that held screw tops can sometimes pose a problem The glass where the screw threads are seems to be less strong than the straight edged tops and what can sometimes happen is that when you insert the cork the pressure on the glass walls at the top of the bottle breaks the neck
