What I found to help the AM audio on the Yaesu FT-857D: first go to the alignment menu and turn the output power wide open - both AM carrier and and SSB Next you go through the alignment menu and there is a setting for the ALC - turn it down about half way Next, turn the power down to 80 by the main menu

Some of this may stem from the fact that the Yaesu radios are indeed made in Japan while the accessories for them are often made in China My FT-857D is made in Japan while the stock MH-31 microphone it came with is made in China as is a lot of other smaller items from Yaesu Does not make sense to me but it must to someone

The best Yaesu for mobile use with a detachable face is the FT-900 of which I have one, but it is only a 10-160 plus general coverage, abd includes a built-in antenna tuner The face is quite a bit bigger at 9" wide, but ut's the best mobile I've used for HF which offers the detachable face option, and isn't a far cry from the ICOM IC-751A in
