It's a Wilkinson anvil made in Queen's Dudley in England Unfortunately my copy of "Anvils in America" is currently 200 miles north of my location right now If that's a punched pritchel hole it was made post 1830's

Lots of grinding and abrasive costs too (we recently had an anvil repair clinic and *1* anvil, a good old one that had been milled to death---too thin a face to use took 6 hours of welding by a fellow who teaches welding at the local community college and has all the nice large welders too Took about $10 of propane just for preheat of the anvil!

My anvil was bought by my wife's grandfather from an sugar plantation auction I had to replace about half the face with hard surface rods back when those could be had for a reasonable price The surface could only be described as "nominally flat" and doesn't have a lot of bounce

Finally, striking anvils are made of mild Steel, so if a striker misses, and hits the anvil, it will sot send a hurdling chunk of steel into somebody's face so these are most of the advantages I know of for a striking anvil Hope this helps ----- frosty, this anvil really needs to be bolded down because it dances all over the place!
