I just ran down to the grocery store and in that short trip I saw at least a dozen cars driving with their lights on in broad daylight All different makes and models, older and newer, so I don't think they were all on automatically Am I missing something? I used to do delivery driving for a car parts company many years ago and it was company policy to always have the headlights on as it reduces the chances of accidents I don't remember the percentage exactly but I think it was 30% These days newer cars have auto headlights and some don't even have the option to have them off

Headlights form a pretty important part of a car's styling, and also have a key role in both aerodynamics and manufacturability I'm pretty sure those last two are the reason so many cars have headlights that protrude weirdly at the corners; it's a way to get certain aerodynamic effects without needing to bend sheet metal into complex shapes
