I had exact same issue with an iPod Touch 4th Gen that I was trying to restore and was stuck in a "in DFU then not in DFU" loop in iTunes Loading an older version of iTunes (11 1 2) on another machine allowed me to recover the iPod Current version of iTunes also appears to have removed the relevant drivers for the device

After restoring the iPod and connecting the iPod with the wall charger the flashing process fails Eject the SD-card and connect it to the pc mac Install and open "AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition" There are listet 2 partitions on your SD-card, one little and a big one called "IPOD"

Speaking of iPods only, there is at least one big cliff in iPod software I believe it happened when the iPod video was released From my personal experience (across two cars) The ipod mini and iPod3 (first 40gb with the row of buttons across the top of the scroll wheel are "old" ipod software Anything after that is "new software "
